It has been a whirlwind 72 hours.
The boys are doing fine, considering they were born premature (36.5 weeks). Their underdeveloped livers had trouble processing the extra blood in their system, resulting in high levels of a chemical called bilirubin. Normally, just feeding and pooping is enough to expel the chemical, but when it's not, the infants develop jaundice, and must be placed under a special light in only a diaper for at least 24 hours.
Such was the fate of little Vincent. Yet, after the phototherapy, and supplementing his feedings with formula, his bilirubin levels were back below the danger zone, and he's been fine since then.
Little Adrian, on the other hand, lost more than the safe 10% of birthweight, and we had to supplement his feedings with formula.
The good news is that these minor setbacks seem to have been resolved, and we are hopeful that the boys will be able to come home with us when Elisa is discharged later today.
They are so tiny still, only about 5 pounds each, but they're doing well, so of course we're thrilled.
